Ideas For Saw Mill Playground

Stakeholder input and feedback are vital to the success of the Community Parks Initiative (CPI) as we aim to rebuild a safer, stronger system of city parks. Last night, we heard many creative ideas and thoughtful concerns on how to improve SAW MILL PLAYGROUND, such as:
· Stronger lighting and add a rubber safety surface,
· Parks enforcement of dog waste pick-up law,
· a water playground for tots echoing the neighborhood history which had saw mills powered by rivers,
· a challenging, creative climbing apparatus for older kids, with curly slides and fun colors,
· an adaptive sensory play area serving children with special needs attending the adjacent school,
· more trees for shade and landscaped greenery, along with picnics/chess tables, and benches,
· a drinking fountain,
· multiuse turf soccer field with soft track around it,
· motivational inspiring quotes posted around the park,
· recycling bins,
· upgrade the basketball courts,
· a bathroom.

We hope that everyone had the chance to share their thoughts with us last night, however, if you missed the opportunity to speak, or have additional follow-up suggestions or concerns you would like us to consider while developing this plan, please share your input HERE. (Scroll down to the grey “Share Your Input: Saw Mill Playground Reconstruction” box, and click on “Share Your Thoughts”). Online comments will be accepted through January 27, 2015.

Concept Plan Presentation to Your Community Board
Based on the input we received yesterday evening, NYC Parks will develop a conceptual plan and a subsequent schematic design for capital improvements to present at your local community board office. The date for this initial presentation about SAW MILL PLAYGROUND is Monday February 9, 2015.

Future Meeting to Brainstorm Programming Ideas
Later this spring, we will be hosting an informal meeting on ways local community members can organize and collaborate to program events and activities at SAW MILL PLAYGROUND. Since you have demonstrated active interest by attending the input meeting last night, I wanted to bring this future opportunity to your attention.

CPI
I will be reaching out in the coming weeks with more information on how to participate in the reconstruction of SAW MILL PLAYGROUND. In the meantime, if you would like to learn more about how CPI fits into the Park Department’s Framework for an Equitable Future, please visit www.nyc.gov/parks/cpi.

Thanks again for your efforts and commitment to improving SAW MILL PLAYGROUND!

I look forward to hearing from you.

Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation , and GreeNYC  to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree . More than 30,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!

How to 'Chip In.'

This year, MulchFest will take place on January 10 and 11, 2015. It’s easier than ever to chip in! There are two ways you can help.

Chipping Locations BROOK PARK!

You can bring your tree to a chipping location on January 10 and 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We’ll chip your tree, and give you your very own bag of mulch!

Or you can bring your tree to a drop-off site from Saturday, January 3 through Sunday, January 11. Leave your tree with us, and we’ll recycle it for you later! The NYC Department of Sanitation will also be conducting special curbside collections  for mulching and recycling of Christmas trees from Monday, January 5, 2015 through Friday, January 16, 2015.

What to Bring

Please remember to remove all lights, ornaments, and netting before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site. Bags will be provided if you wish to take some free mulch home.

The South Bronx Farmers Market is thrilled to announce our first Farmers and Holiday Market, taking place at the Bronx Museum of the Arts on Saturday, December 13th from 11am - 5pm. THE SOUTH BRONX CSA is a community-driven initiative that brings the people of the community together to build the necessary resources and infrastructure to continue to transform the South Bronx into an accessible and affordable food oasis. Our mission is to create affordable access to locally and organically grown vegetables for everyone in the South Bronx and beyond. Join today!

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a community-based movement that creates affordable access to healthy foods for city-residents while allowing local farmers to thrive in an environment that is increasingly competitive and unfavorable. Before the growing season, CSA members purchase a share of food from a partnering local farmer, allowing the farmer to focus on farm duties instead of struggling to secure a customer base and competing against large agribusiness.

Thank you to all our supporters.

This year your support has allowed us to provide outdoor educational opportunities for over 1000 youth from the South Bronx and NYC.

soup

You allow us to educate young people, regardless of need or ability to pay, through our Environmental Education programs.

You enable us to research, document, and organize about  the incredible public space opportunities and cultural history of our waterfront, and prevented any work or any public monies released to Fresh Direct.

You permit us to celebrate and support the many schools and organizations  and the CSA and Farmer’s Market who use Brook Park and make our neighborhood so special.

You make it possible for us to move forward on our initiative to divert 1,000,000 millions of rainwater a year from the sewer system to create a wetland habitat that will replicate the historic brook that ran through our community.

And so much more.

Thank you from Friends of Brook Park team.

Your support is what makes our work possible.

Here is a great video from our friends at Rebel DIaz Arts Collective for this time of year, it is called “Thankstaking”.

South Bronx Receives Award

Felix Fishman Awards Luncheon

New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a leading civil rights advocacy group, held its 2014 Felix A. Fishman Awards Luncheon at the House of the Association of the New York City Bar. Honored at the event were Nisha Agarwal, Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs, which promotes the well-being of immigrant communities, and South Bronx Unite, a coalition working together to improve and protect the social, environmental, and economic future of the South Bronx. Both were recognized for their progressive advocacy work around social and environmental justice.“The Felix A. Fishman Awards luncheon is a chance for us to applaud the inspiring work some of our noteworthy community leaders have accomplished,” said McGregor Smyth, Executive Director of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest. “We cannot serve our local communities without leaders like Nisha and South Bronx Unite, and hope to continue working closely with both until New York is a more just place.”“South Bronx Unite strives to improve the quality of life for our local residents, especially when it comes to our children’s health. New York Lawyers for the Public Interest has been an integral partner in these efforts, particularly in our community’s ongoing efforts to oppose FreshDirect’s relocation to the South Bronx,” said Mychal Johnson, Co-founder, South Bronx Unite. “We are humbled to have been selected as a Felix A. Fishman Awards recipient and hope to continue this long journey with NYLPI until all future development decisions are made with the community’s input.”15836353295_fdfbecc6d7_z

About Felix Fishman

Felix Fishman pictureFelix A. Fishman’s deep commitment to helping others, his expertise as a lawyer, and his wonderful and heartwarming sense of humor earned him the respect and affection of those who knew him.

Mr. Fishman, a graduate of City College and Columbia Law School, practiced at the law firm of Moses & Singer for sixty-five years. His impressive tenure at the firm included serving as legal counsel for Bankers Trust Company and L.F. Rothschild & Co., among others. During his accomplished career, Mr. Fishman established himself as a talented trusts and estates lawyer and, more importantly, as a lawyer whose work was guided by an unerring moral compass. For Mr. Fishman, a staunch believer in progressive ethical ideals, the capacity to care for others was the true barometer of a successful lawyer.

For 31 years, Mr. Fishman also served as a trustee and director of the Henry & Lucy Moses Fund, where he was instrumental in directing hundreds of millions of dollars of support to medical, educational, and other charitable organizations in the New York area.

New York Lawyers for the Public Interest is grateful to the Henry & Lucy Moses Fund for endowing these awards in honor of Felix A. Fishman, who shared our dedication to using the law in service of others.
