How
CSA Works |
The
South Bronx Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Program is a group of community members who have joined together to
get fresh, healthy vegetables at great prices from a NY farmer.
Here’s
how it works: members pay our farmers an annual
fee, and in turn, receive a weekly share of the harvest throughout
the growing season, which runs from June through November. Community Supported Agriculture helps him buy seeds, pay rent
and grow his vegetables.
Every
Week, June-November The farmers bring the vegetables that are in
season to our distribution site in Mott Haven. Some of it is grown in our
area, including Brook Park! CSA members take home their shares and enjoy
them all week long until the next distribution! |
What
Members Get Members receive 7-10 different types of vegetables
each week. A share is usually
enough vegetables to feed 1-3 people. What you get depends on what
is growing and what does well at the farm. Everything you get is high
quality, chemical free (organic) and very fresh.
PICKING UP MY SHARE WHEN: Every Week, June-October
in 2007.
WHERE: Brook Park; the
corner of E141st Street and Brook Avenue, Bronx.
Example share in JUNE: Napa cabbage, Baby red lettuce, onion, radishes,
spring garlic, fennel, mixed cooking greens
Example share in AUGUST: cherry tomatoes, tomatillos, eggplant, tomatoes,
peppers, lettuce, beans, hot peppers, onion, melon

HOW
MUCH DOES A SHARE COST?
We offer two share types depending on family size.
The single share works well for 1-3
people, the double share is better
for families of 3-5.
Share cost is income based and covers the entire season (20-22 weeks
of produce).
All members receive the same size share (double shares receive twice
the amount).
**We also accept food stamps.
Single Share Prices 2005
Income above $30,000 a year
$contact
Income between $20,000-$30,000yr
$contact
Income below $20,000 a year $contact
|
| DO
I PAY FOR MY SHARE ALL AT ONCE? It’s
important to pay the fee up front, in the winter or spring to help
the farmer with his costs. If you are unable to pay in advance
there are other options, including many lower priced shares. Members
can pay:
-One
lump sum at the time of joining.
-Equal payments before June.
-EBT/Food Stamps every 2 weeks. |

VOLUNTEER HOURS
*CSA is Member Driven,
so members volunteer 4-6 hours per season or become more involved
to help the CSA run.
Bring your compost to Brook Park at 141st Street and Brook Avenue!
Leave it at the gate if for some reason we are not there!

Norwich
Meadows Farm began in 1998 with ½ acre of certified organic
fruits and vegetables. We began by growing produce unique in
flavor and variety. In the beginning this was a challenge, as
folks did not want to experiment with new things and we did not
offer some specific vegetables that people like to eat. Six years
later we have expanded to 30 acres that grow produce interesting
to eaters and also satisfying their taste buds. In addition to
working with you to form our CSA we sell our products at the
Greenmarkets and work with other CSA groups in NYC. |
The
goal of the South Bronx CSA Program is to reach
out to the community and promote a healthier lifestyle to South
Bronx residents. By participating in the CSA program families and
individuals can learn, first hand, the importance of eating chemical
free, locally grown produce. They also gain the power of choice
over what they eat and where they buy it. The CSA Program is excited
to work with Just Food, a NYC food justice organization, to make
this program sustainable and help make a stronger and healthier
Bronx.
