Album: Paddle Retreat with Fire lotus Zen TempleA Day-Long River Trip in the Heart of the City
Saturday, June 30
For those living in the intense urban environment of New York City, nature can feel distant and remote. Yet this incredible city is remarkable in its profusion of woodlands, wetlands and waterways, even wildlife. Many New Yorkers feel they must travel some distance to experience nature. This workshop will reveal that nature is alive and present, right here in the heart of the city.
To many, the waterways of New York are something to pass over or underneath as we go about our days. Yet these waterways are vital not only to the health of all who live in the city, but to the health of our larger environment as well. Venture beyond the water’s edge and the quiet, steady flow of the river will both calm and quietly exhilarate you. The Harlem River is a tidal estuary, alternating the direction of its flow. We’ll flow with the current heading north to the tip of Manhattan and historic Inwood Hill Park, experiencing a new perspective of the river, shoreline and city. Today’s balance of the hyper-developed metropolis, highways and polluting infrastructure, side-by-side with thick canopies of trees, shoreline green spaces, birds and fish can reconnect us with the natural world amidst the hectic pace of the city and inspire us to act to better serve and protect our natural home.
