Don't Frack New York!
Support a State-Wide Ban!
TO: Governor Paterson, DEC Commissioner Peter Grannis, State Senate, State Assembly, DEC dSGEIS Comments

INTRO:
Geological experts claim that shale beds in New York, particularly the Utica and Marcellus Shale, contain significant amounts of natural gas. Numerous energy and gas drilling companies are now vying with one another to tap these deposits using a method known as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracking). The recent release of the fatally flawed draft supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement on horizontal drilling and hydrofracking by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is now bringing this issue to the forefront. Hydrofracking, a gas extraction process developed by Halliburton, pumps millions of gallons of water and 'fracking fluids' containing mixtures of up to 250 toxic chemicals under high pressure to break apart the rock, forcing the gas to the surface. With operations in 32 states, the gas industry has provided ample evidence that extracting gas from low permeable rock is environmentally unsafe.
It is unlikely that this method of drilling could ever be made completely safe, regardless of regulations, and natural gas drilling in New York State has the capacity to jeopardize the health, safety and welfare of millions of New York residents. As global corporations turn our state into a sacrifice zone, reap massive short-term profits, and significantly add to greenhouse gas emissions, the true costs of drilling in terms of environmental impacts, quality of life, and long-term cleanup costs will be passed on to state residents.
Due to the inherent danger of un-natural gas drilling and the potentially massive impact on our local rural communities, we are calling for a complete ban on drilling in low permeable stone deposits in New York State. Support a State-Wide Ban!

Mary Patrick-Grabowski,
Fracking is not a solution, but a short-term money-making sales pitch that will result in long-term problems that can not be reversed. PLEASE BAN in NYS.

robin hensel,

xxxxxxxx,
Until evidence proves otherwise, fracking seems a very dangerous gamble on our state's most precious resource, drinking water. It would only benefit a few. Say no to fracking.

William Beavers,

katalin lukacs,

Clark Goodrich,
If Fracking is approved in NY State, I will vote against every incumbent politician. Democrat or Republican, I don't care. If your a incumbent your out. Democrats don't seem to be helping this situation. Common sense tells us that there is absolutely no reason to rush this decision. Its not like the GAS is going anywhere.

xxxxxxxx,

annette bailey,
stop the dangerous fracking

Daniel Stadnyckyj,
Clean pure water for everyone is more important than money in the pockets of a few greedy slobs.

IF you sign the coalition letter on this website, remember it is NOT asking for Fracking to be ban, but ONLY for more reguations to be put forth.
Read the memo on this website about the health concerns: http://www.bassett.org/our-network/media-room/news/2011/bassett-statements-on-hydrofracking/ This is the ONLY Medical Institution that has come forth with the facts. We need the ENTIRE MEDICAL COMMUNITY ON BOARD HERE. Please do what you can to notify doctors, nurses. Write to the Medical Society of NY. http://www.mssny.org/ Plead with them to get on board, and make a statement like Bassett Hospitals statement. Fracking is going forward in NY. They are in the Chenango County area and move towards Utica, NY. We need to be vigilant. Write letters. Make copies and start passing information out to people. It is SHOCKING the amount of people who Don't have ANY idea what is coming their way: The destruction, the DNA Damage, the muddy chemical filled water! Dear God get this information out... !!
Email me, we will coordinate towns, villages and get a forum going. I signed your petition... :-)
THIS IS LONG TERM PERMANENT DAMAGE TO OUR BODIES. CHEMICALS AND RADIATION AFFECT DNA. IT IS SO SERIOUS. IT WILL DAMAGE US FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES, IF WE LIVE THAT LONG.

Steven Handwerker,

R. Dunleavey,
Fracking is unsafe and should not be allowed to destroy the environment and water in NYS. Shame on Dick Cheney!

RUSS REGAL,
STOP FRACKING NOW BEFORE YOU KILL US ALL

Cynthia Browne,
This extraction process has destroyed ground water in every location where it has been used. The costs far outweigh the benefits gained from the small amount of gas that can be extracted.

Amy,
Should our worst fears come true, like irreversible pollution to the environment from saline flowback water containing hundreds of chemicals and radiation picked up from the rock formations below, the results could be monumental and irreversible. The spent water from hydrofracking can’t be treated, and is typically disposed of by injecting it back into used-up wells. No one can say how well the fractured rock formations deep below the surface will act as permanent reservoirs of that toxic stuff. It could screw up our local environment in a short period of time, or it could be a nasty gift to our children’s children’s children. Will they wonder what we were thinking when we came up with this “green” alternative?

Wellington Lee,

Kyle Hackmeister,
Weatherford International employee

Susan Williams,
Don't let corporate greed destroy our drinking water and the environment!

Patricia Dobosz,

Stephen J. Rogers,
Don't Frack With NY'ers or NY!

Rita Kane,
Please ban fracking in all of new york state! Our city and our world will never be the same. It is bad enough this is happening to people in rural areas all over the U.S. Just awful!

Anthony Breuer,

Mary Burns,
Without Water nothing lives. Man woman child and animals.

Carolyn Kavarnos,
No Fracking!!!

Bill Carr,
I spent 20 years in the Air force defending this country and it pains me to see that big business is so money driven and greedy that they would sell our kids to pad their checking accounts. for all of you that say that this is good for the economy and we need to keep people working, I say that you should buy some land and plant some fruit trees, buy a couple cows and get on with life. I hate that this government simply wants to collect taxes and denies us the most important protection and that is protection of the land. It is not our land we are just borrowing it from our kids and I have developed a deep respect for the european countries, especially Germany for the simple reason that no persons rights are more important than the protection of the land. In my opinion, no one has the right to do whatever they want to with a piece of property that they choose to call theirs, because it is NOT theirs, It belongs to all of us. If my neighbor is doing something with his land that affects me or my children then that has gone too far. those people that have sold the mineral rights to the gas and oil companies are not the people that are going to get brain cancer and tumers. They aren’t the ones that are going to have multiple miscarriages and still births or have handicap children. It is all the rest of us that didn’t have a choice. This country is my backyard and I refuse to watch it be destroyed by big business and greedy landowners that think that they have won the lottery. I want this fracking stopped and I want the ones that gave the gas companies a get out of jail free card behind bars. I realize that I am not from New York but there really isn't a large forum here in Arkansas. This is bigger than just a state issue. I want to see it stopped NATIONWIDE!

brian west,

Sue Harris,

Please don't frack up our water supply!!

Jagdeep Davies,
This is a critical issue for me and will be one of the critical issues that decide how I lend my political support in the following election.

Josh Cheuse,
These companies know they are poisoning us. Yet they continue to drill. Tell your friends.

Jeff,
After viewing a special on HBO, I find that apes have more since than the people in government and the people who run Halliburton as well as all who say that this type of behavior is acceptable. Does Dick Chaney or any of his relatives live in the areas infected by this blatant disregard for humanity? I watched people set water from their taps on fire. I am so sick and tired of our representatives using the job card as an excuse for destroying our environment, our safety, and most important the safety of our children. What good is money in our pockets if all we have to look forward to is more cancer, or sickness of all kinds? We all need to take a stand in this debate. Unfortunately we are bombarded with the notion that we need to have and that we deserve to have all the latest and greatest luxuries no matter what the cost. If we learn to sacrifice some things, generations to come will not be sacrificed. What was Bush thinking when he passed the laws in 2005 that not only is criminal, it is immoral. We are facing a similar burden with the drilling in the gulf waters. For too many years drilling companies have done things for the sake of saving a dollar. Are they going to clean up their mess? I say no. Until we band together and say enough, we will continue to disrespect ourselves and our children. Is there no one on this planet that can come up with a solution to our energy crisis? Are we that ignorant? All these companies need to be held accountable for their actions. The people that have been elected to protect us are the same ones who are protecting the enemies of mankind. What will we be drinking ten years from now when we won't be able to find clean drinking water? The waters polluted from these drilling practices should be bottled and shipped back to the companies that have created these hazards and have these defiant ones drink said water. Again I say, Americans let's band together and begin to boycott these major drilling companies by beginning to make certain sacrifices and save our planet for generations to come. Even in the animal world Mothers provide for their young to make sure that their species survive. Are we less than animals?

Shoshana Sommer,

Rachel Knaggs,
I oppose fracking and will do anything in my power to help prevent it. There is clear evidence showing the dangers to our water supply.

Sharon Lawless,

Arigo Sugihara,
it is irresponsible to allow hydrofracking in a state that is home to millions of people. Water, clean, drinkable water is a precious commodity and will become far more valuable in this century. Why destroy this irreplaceable resource; one that will become ever more valuable and is renewable. New York and especially the Catskill's water is one of the best in the world. Let's sell this to the rest of the United States and not destroy this valuable economic resource.

Hannah Moorhead,

Sarah Moon,

xxxxxxxx,

Marilyn Gold,

Dennis & Nancy Rodabaugh,
no, no, no.....10 years down the road, this will show its ugly head, or sooner...stop the killing of our lakes and enviroment!

Inge Otto,

xxxxxxxx,

Dorothea Poggi,
Just because we own parts of the farmland and or water shed etc. does not mean we have a right to contribute to proven detremental practices to obtain Nat. Gas at the expense of any states or all states future water supply. We all have a right to (Free) healthy water, REGARDLESS OF THE TEMPTATION TO PROFIT ON OUR INVESTMENTS IN LAND.
This fracking method would not be profitable if done in a environmentally safe manner. Therefore it should be phased out as an idea that was just WRONG. Not to encourage a HORRIFIC invention that proves to be profitable only at the expense of our present and future balance of life. Besides the obvious gas torch faucets, the poisoned wells, the lakes and streams being raped for their potable water supplies, the less obvious threat is the toxins that evaporate into the air and fall on our trees, the rain desperses these toxins throughout the food chain....they are carcinogens that carry through the food chain.

xxxxxxxx,
This technology is clearly too dangerous. There have been disasters across the country, and NY State will become the next victim. We will also ruin our water supply.

Harry and Ellen Levine,

Dr. Ronald E. Bishop,

Jack Spaeth,
Having spent 2 years studying the nature of the process of extracting gas from impermeable formations, I have become convinced there is no way to do it without widespread and intense impacts that are intolerable for the people who live in proximity to this activity. People who have leased, ultimately, are going to deeply regret having done so unless they can move far away. For their sakes, as well as for the rest of us, there is no other way to save New York State for all New Yorkers except to ban horizontal drilling / high-volume hydraulic fracturing in the state.

lise brenner,

Thomas Thomson,

David Barouh,

Amanda Byrnes,
Statewide ban now.

Charlene Sugihara,
Water is our most important resource. It sustains life. Let's not destroy the incredible natural resource we have in the Catskills. It sustains us and will do so for generations to come.

xxxxxxxx,
It is time to realize there is more to life than money/profits....the land can give us everything we need to substain life...if we allow it to!

xxxxxxxx,
Why doesn't anyone speak about conservation anymore? Why don't we ration gas? Why don't we declare one day a week, or even one day a month as non-driving days? Why don't we turn out all the lights for a night? Why are we all so stupid about the long term?

Kimberly Sternberg,

Linnea Hartmark,
I want the clean air and pristine water in the Oneonta area to be preserved

xxxxxxxx,
The state of New York is wobbling under unprecedented economic stressors. This proposal will add environmental and health stressors to our already-overburdened state.

Daniel Levin,

Reverend Ellen Sokolow,

Carole Marner,
No life without water. Can live without fossil fuel. Probably live longer and better too.

Ann Ellis,

Peter Maniscalco,

Jane,
Man cannot live by money alone. We are mostly water based and must have clean drinkable water to survive. Drilling for oil can only damage the thing we need most.

Ronald Knaggs,

Horace H Albaugh,

Annie Lenihan,
One of the most pristine areas left in the U.S. and these corporations are going to come in and take it! Without the people's permission. 2 percent of the people will benefit, the rest will pay for the rest of their lives! Stop them now!

Carl Arnold,
Poisoning the state is NOT an option.

Ken Baer,

Laura,
This is the biggest environmental & public health threat facing New York -- and we have the power to stop it! Let's mobilize and take this opportunity to develop truly clean & renewable energies for NYS.

Robert Jereski,
Outrageous with what we know of the impacts of this hydrocarbon extraction method on water, air, and climate that some would consider allowing it!

Antonia Perez,

christina giorgio,
A state-wide ban is the only responsible position.

Regina Gradess,

Aazam Otero,
NO DRILLING!

richard chilton,
As both a former resident of New York State and New York City, i emphatically oppose any attempt to fractionalize our so-call'd "Energy Independence" on the backs of continuing to relie on the subterraneous extraction of fossil fuels.
